Rapper Navio, born Daniel Kigozi, opened up about how he and Bobi Wine came together to record one of their most memorable collaborations, Number One, a song that remains a fan favorite years after its release.Reflecting on how the partnership was born, Navio explained that before he and fellow rapper The Mith left Uganda for school, hip-hop was the dominant genre on the local music scene. He recalled that even promoters organizing reggae concerts featuring international stars like Maxi Priest still had to book hip-hop acts such as Montell Jordan or Chaka Demus & Pliers because of the genre’s immense popularity. However, when he and The Mith returned from their studies, they found the music landscape had changed, with Bebe Cool and Jose Chameleone leading the industry.Despite maintaining their popularity and being the first music group in Uganda to earn Shs1 million for a performance, Navio felt that both he and Bobi Wine were being overlooked. Instead of waiting for opportunities, they decided to create their own.The duo joined forces at D-Records, then based on Lumumba Avenue, where they worked with producer Allan Okia and recorded five to six songs together, including the smash hit Number One. Their collaborations became instant classics and continue to resonate with music lovers to this day.Col. You could have a reggae show in town with Maxi Priest, but they’d still have to book a Montell Jordan or Chaka Demus & Pliers. When we came back from our studies, we found Bebe Cool and Chameleone were leading and doing their thing. We were still big. We were the first group to be paid a million shillings, but Bobi was like, ‘Those guys are not giving me a door,’ and I was like, ‘I’m not getting a door from people either.’So we linked up and said, ‘Let’s create a gate.’ We recorded about five or six songs at D-Records with Allan Okia producing. We did a lot of shows, but we wanted to make a statement that there was a big four. We wanted to make a big comeback, and that’s how we did it. @dembefmug #Dembefm #Cheza @kim_morgan_sr ♬ original sound – DembefmUg official – DembefmUg official The post Navio reveals how he and Bobi Wine teamed up to create iconic hit ‘Number One’ appeared first on MBU.
