According to meter readers carrying out the field verification in Bengaluru, the app is accepting any photo when uploaded in place of uploading the photo of actual documents.They said that the absence of basic validation features in the app raises concerns about the accuracy and credibility of the ongoing beneficiary verification process.Incorrect uploadsA meter reader from Malleswaram said that the application fails to validate uploaded documents. “Even if we upload the photo of a blank sheet of paper instead of a tenant’s document or rental agreement, the app accepts it. Most mobile applications reject incorrect or invalid uploads, but this app doesn’t. It should be able to identify whether the uploaded document is valid and prompt the user to upload the correct one,” he said.Another meter reader from Ganganagar pointed out that the app also lacks proper verification of beneficiary photographs. “After entering all the required details, the app asks for the beneficiary’s passport-size photograph. Yesterday, while verifying a woman beneficiary, I uploaded her father’s photo in her absence, and the app accepted it without any objection. I deleted it and uploaded the passport size photo of a woman beneficiary. The application should be capable of identifying such mismatches and ensure that the correct beneficiary’s photograph is uploaded,” he said.A meter reader in Munireddy Palya, said, “At the end of capturing all the information on the app, it also asks us to enter the exact location and captures the information from GPS. This is done so that the meter readers don’t cheat by uploading it from their home or office. But what is the point if the meter reader captures wrong photos and the app is not alerting them.”Non voter details also acceptedThe Chief Minister has announced that the scheme will not be provided for non-voters of Karnataka, to check which meter readers are seeking Voter ID cards at the houses they are surveying. However, a meter reader in North Bengaluru said the app is accepting details of non-voters of the State.“I have entered the details of Aadhaar card and voter id and both these documents have his address of Madhya Pradesh. The app accepted it instead of rejecting when I entered the voter id or EPIC number along with its photo. What is the point in conducting the door to door exercise when the app cannot reject the non voters or people from other state being benefitted while they have voting rights in other states?,” he said.Validation featuresThey have said the absence of basic validation features in the app raises concerns about the accuracy and credibility of the ongoing beneficiary verification process.When asked about how the department is planning to address the glitch in the mobile app, the official from BESCOM said, “The meter readers cannot upload wrong photos. Once the verification is completed and if wrong photos are uploaded, we will pull up respective meter readers.
