The tremor was recorded in the evening on Wednesday, July 1st, 2026, at 9:57 pm local time, at an intermediate to considerable depth of 201. km below the surface. The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.3 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.0, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.3.Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Jurm (pop. 23,100) located 44 km from the epicenter, Farkhar (pop. 10,500) 54 km away, Fayzabad (pop. 44,400) 58 km away, Baharak (pop. 32,600) 59 km away, Rustaq (pop. 25,600) 80 km away, Taloqan (pop. 64,300) 84 km away, and Ashkasham (pop. 12,100) 96 km away.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)I: Not felt1928–928 km (576–576 mi)928 km (576 mi)II: Very weak shaking3352–618 km (219–384 mi)458 km (284 mi)III: Weak shaking3232–478 km (144–297 mi)368 km (229 mi)IV: Light shaking366–443 km (41–275 mi)259 km (161 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (11 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.Get the Android appI didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report! When aftershocks are detected, we will update this section. What are aftershocks?Larger earthquakes (above magnitude 5 or so) such as this one are usually followed by smaller ones known as aftershocks that occur in the same area during the days, weeks, months or even years after the main shock.[More info]What about this quake?Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the quake likely ruptured beneath a surface area of approximately 32 km2 (12 square miles) as a first-order estimate. The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 10 km (6 mi).[More info]Recorded aftershocks, latest first (0 quake)Jul 1, 2026 10:27 pm (GMT +4:30)20 minutes ago - felt5.5217 km0 km - This quake50 km SW of Jurm, AfghanistanMain Shock (this quake)MoreMap of aftershocksEarthquake statisticsAverage number of earthquakesBased on data from the past 26 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 384 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):Mag. 7 or higher: 0.14 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 7.1 years)Mag. 6 or higher: 0.76 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 1.3 years)Mag. 5 or higher: 6.2 quakes per yearMag. 4 or higher: 157 quakes per year (or 13.1 quakes per month)Mag. 3 or higher: 285 quakes per year (or 23.8 quakes per month)Mag. 2 or higher: 369 quakes per year (or 30.8 quakes per month)Mag. 1 or higher: 382 quakes per year (or 31.9 quakes per month)The area where this quake occurred has a very high level of seismic activity.
