Back to the Future (1985) is one of the most beloved sci-fi comedy classics of all time. Collectively, the three films also happen to form one of the most beloved trilogies of all time.Part of the reason Back to the Future, whether the original film or the series as a whole, remains so beloved is because it has been untouched by modern sequels or remakes. Of course, talk of a potential fourth film has circulated for years, but such a project is unlikely to ever come to light.Credit: Universal PicturesDirector Robert Zemeckis and writer Bob Gale have frequently opposed the idea of continuing the film series, while stars Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd have expressed differing views. Now, Back to the Future is a multimedia franchise that includes a cartoon series, a long-running comic book series, a Telltale video game, and even an incredibly successful stage musical.Credit: Universal PicturesBack to the Future: The MusicalWith music and lyrics by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard and a book by Bob Gale, Back to the Future: The Musical adapts the original film, with original music added alongside iconic songs from the 1985 classic, including “The Power of Love” and “Johnny B. Goode.”The production debuted in Manchester, U.K. in 2020, before moving to London’s West End the following year. The performance, which is now running internationally, including shows in Japan, North America, Germany, and on Royal Caribbean Cruises, has received positive reviews from theatergoers and critics, while picking up multiple awards along the way.It has been so successful that it got its own behind-the-scenes documentary earlier this year: A Future on Stage: The Making of a Broadway Musical, which features interviews with Michael J. Fox, Robert Zemeckis, and Bob Gale, and with cast members and creatives from the musical.Credit: Back to the Future – The MusicalUnsurprisingly, though, the musical has gone through multiple casting changes since its debut. As such, it has seen numerous actors portray Marty McFly and Doc Brown, the two iconic characters who were famously played by Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, respectively, in the Back to the Future films. Now, following the production’s recent curtain call at London’s Adelphi Theater, Back to the Future: The Musical is set to return again, this time embarking on a U.K. tour. The show will open in the Bristol Hippodrome theater on Thursday October 8, before continuing through other major cities including Edinburgh, Liverpool, Milton Keynes, Birmingham, Manchester, and Plymouth, with final performances currently listed for the Wales Millennium Center in Cardiff on Saturday November 13 (although further tour dates will be announced).Credit: Universal PicturesRelated: ‘Stranger Things’ Actress Could Play Female Marty McFly in ‘Back to the Future’ RebootMeet the New Marty McFlyAs for the cast, American actor Roger Bart (Desperate Housewives) will reprise his role as eccentric scientist and inventor Doc Brown, having originated the role in the West End, on Broadway, and internationally, while Australian rising star Axel Duffy will play the time-traveling teen Marty McFly.Similarly, Duffy originated the role of Marty in the Australian production, alongside Bart. Previously, he has also portrayed both Quidditch star Victor Krum and Hufflepuff student Karl Jenkins in the Australian production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.Bart will open the tour at the Bristol Hippodrome (October 8 – November 21) and will also play at the Edinburgh Playhouse (December 2 2026 – January 2 2027).Further casting for the role of Doc Brown and the remaining company has yet to be announced. You can check out images of Bart’s Doc Brown and Duffy’s Marty McFly on the official website.Credit: Universal PicturesProducer Colin Ingram welcomed Roger Bart back to the stage in a statement:“We’re thrilled to welcome back stage and screen star Roger Bart to the DeLorean in Bristol and Edinburgh after creating the role of Doc Brown in the West End production and playing it in Sydney and on Broadway where he was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance; Roger has a gift of musical comedy acting that is up there with Nathan Lane and Martin Short.”He also praised Alex Duffy, citing his performance in the Sydney version of the show:“At the same time, we can’t wait to introduce Axel Duffy who wowed audiences playing Marty McFly in Sydney. Back to the Future is one of the most technically ambitious productions to ever tour the U.K. and Ireland, combining groundbreaking stagecraft, spectacular effects and beloved storytelling on a scale rarely seen on the road. Finding performers who can not only meet those demands but also capture the spirit of these legendary characters is essential – the audiences are in for something special!”Back to the Future: The Musical is also produced by Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale.Credit: Universal PicturesWill Back to the Future 4 Happen? There are currently no plans for a fourth Back to the Future film.Perhaps the closest we’ll ever get to a reboot is the musical itself, as the production involves recastings and many notable changes to adapt the story to suit modern audiences, changes that are typically associated with modern film and television reboots.Interestingly, though, in 2024, Robert Zemeckis told the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he would like to adapt the musical into a film.Tickets for the Back to the Future: The Musical U.K. tour are now available.Have you seen Back to the Future: The Musical?
