Lawyer Jason Azzopardi said he expects “the truth to come out” as the long-awaited trial of Yorgen Fenech, who is accused of ordering the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, gets underway.Speaking outside court today, Azzopardi, who forms part of the legal team representing the Caruana Galizia family, cautioned that the proceedings are likely to stretch over several weeks.“This will be a very long trial. It will take some time. We’re predicting that it will last several weeks,” he said. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovin Malta (@lovinmalta)Asked what he’s expecting from the case, Azzopardi said the focus should be on uncovering the truth and delivering justice.“What I am expecting is what any decent, country-loving person should expect: the truth. We should expect the truth to come out and justice to be served.”He paid tribute to Daphne Caruana Galizia, describing her as “a journalist, a mother… a wife who was brutally murdered to have her voice struck down.”Without discussing evidence expected to emerge during the trial, Azzopardi referred to the prosecution’s case, saying it alleges that Yorgen Fenech ordered Caruana Galizia’s murder to prevent damaging information about him and his business activities from becoming public.“I will not go into the nitty gritty of what we should be expecting in the trial for obvious reasons,” he said. “What I will say is we expect the truth to come out.”Azzopardi also highlighted the years of work that preceded the start of proceedings.“We have been working for so many years. There’s a lot of people behind the scenes who’ve made huge amounts of sacrifices to get here.”The trial marks a major milestone in the nearly nine-year quest for justice following Caruana Galizia’s assassination in October 2017. Fenech, the businessman accused of commissioning the murder, has pleaded not guilty. The case is expected to feature weeks of testimony from investigators, forensic experts and key witnesses as a jury hears the evidence.•
