This milestone has helped expand access to smartphones and digital financial services for people traditionally excluded from formal credit systems.M-KOPA’s broader economic contribution continues to grow alongside its customer base. In 2024, the company contributed more than shs20 billion in tax revenue and over shs120.8 billion in local procurement spending. Its network of more than 3,500 agents continues to create earning opportunities across the country.Alongside the release of its 2025 Impact Report, the company has announced two new customer upgrade benefits under its ‘More Than a Phone’ platform. The additions are designed to give customers more affordable and flexible ways to access newer devices. The milestone reflects more than a decade of expanding financial access for Ugandans. According to the report, independently validated by global impact consultancy Caribou, 53% of surveyed customers purchased their first smartphone through M-KOPA, while 86% report using their device for income generation. Among surveyed customers, 86% reported an improved quality of life, while 75% said they are earning more since joining M-KOPA.“Reaching over shs1 trillion in unlocked credit reflects the trust our customers have placed in M-KOPA over the past decade,” said Brendah Nambalirwa-Tzadok, General Manager of M-KOPA Uganda.“It also shows that access to smartphones is no longer only about connectivity. For many customers, it is directly linked to income generation, financial inclusion, and everyday opportunity.”To build on this momentum, M-KOPA Uganda has introduced two new upgrade benefits for customers who complete their device payments:Discount on Next Purchase. Customers who have completed their device payments can access discounted pricing on their next smartphone upgrade directly through the M-KOPA App.Phone Swap (Trade-in). Customers can trade in their current device and upgrade to a newer model with zero deposit. The new additions expand M-KOPA’s ‘More Than a Phone’ offering, which already includes Free Daily Data, Cash Loans, Screen Repair, and Hospital Insurance underwritten by Turaco Micro Insurance Company Ltd.According to M-KOPA, the expanded offering is intended to help customers maintain long-term access to smartphones and digital services, rather than treating device ownership as a one-time transaction.
