We've never had anyone go straight to assholery over free stuff, but have definitely gotten the "can you bring it to me?" for still-useful stuff we no longer want. It does seem beyond some to recognize that you're looking for a win-win - you get rid of something still useful that you no longer have use for at minimum inconvenience to yourself, they get a free thing for the cost of just going to pick it up.
