Moviment Graffitti has launched a policy paper calling for urgent reforms to end child statelessness in Malta, arguing that no child born or raised in the country should grow up without a nationality. The organisation says statelessness occurs when a child is not recognised as a citizen by any country, leaving them without a nationality and often creating barriers to accessing basic services and full legal recognition. It estimates that a few hundred children in Malta could be affected.According to the group, Malta currently lacks effective procedures to identify stateless children or provide them with a clear route to obtaining a nationality. As a result, some children are left in legal uncertainty despite having lived their entire lives in Malta. In its policy paper, Moviment Graffitti proposes reforms across seven areas, including the introduction of a formal statelessness determination procedure, the creation of a dedicated authority to handle statelessness cases, and amendments to Malta’s citizenship laws. The organisation argues that, if implemented, the proposals would bring Malta’s legal framework into line with its international obligations and help ensure that no child born or raised in Malta is left without a nationality. What are your thoughts on the proposals put forward?•
