Cole Campbell’s time with Borussia Dortmund is over.Campbell has joined newly-promoted Bundesliga club Elversberg in a permanent deal, both sides announced Thursday. The U.S. Youth National Team attacker signed a four-year contract through June 2030.“With Cole, we are signing another highly talented player who will help us enormously with his extraordinary pace and one-on-one skills. We have already tried for him for a long time and are very pleased that he has chosen us,” says Elversberg sporting director Christian Weber. Campbell joined Borussia Dortmund in 2022 from Icelandic club Breidablik UBK. He made seven appearances for the first team, in addition to playing for several of Dortmund’s youth teams during his time there. He spent most of the 2025-26 campaign on loan at fellow German club Hoffenheim, where he made five appearances. Campbell switched his allegiance to the United States from Iceland in 2024 and has since featured for the USMNT U-19’s, U-20’s and U-23’s. He was part of the USMNT U-20’s involvement at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup last year. The 20-year-old now hopes a move at club level will help him get his career back on track. “The talks with those responsible were very open from the beginning and have developed just as positively,” Campbell said in a club interview. “I have the feeling that I am coming to an exciting team here, in which there is a lot of potential and in which I can contribute well. That’s why I’m sure this step to Elversberg is just right. I’m looking forward to the team and the new time here in the club.”Elversberg finished second in the 2. Bundesliga last season which helped them earn promotion to the top-flight. Vincent Wagner’s squad will open their new league campaign on August 29 against Bayer Leverkusen.
