England star Noni Madueke wants to be one of the best players in the world – criticism is like water off a duck’s back. That’s the verdict of his private coach Saul Isaksson-Hurst, who hailed the mentality of a player that, for some reason, fans ‘love to hate’.Madueke has featured in four of England’s games at the World Cup so farGetty“Noni came to me when he was a young pro at PSV [Eindhoven],” Isaksson-Hurst told talkSPORT’s Hawksbee and Jacobs.“I knew of him obviously coming through the England set-up, top player, unbelievable talent, great mindset.“He was at Spurs and was very brave to go and play in Holland to try and get an opportunity, which he did. And he came to me, and obviously I knew him; his super strength was cutting inside a bit like [Arjen] Robben. “And I said to him, ‘Look, we’ve got to work on those outside movements as well,’ so going both ways if you like.“So a lot of my work revolves around individual tactics, trying to break down a game into those game-changing moments for that position, that profile, and really work on that. “We worked intensively – A few weeks later, we had the Cruyff Cup, which is like the Community Shield in Holland against Ajax.“Big, big derby – And [he] scored two goals, exactly what we worked on, and he was hooked.”Madueke has both enjoyed and endured a topsy-turvy few years since returning to English football with Chelsea in 2023.During his time at Stamford Bridge, now-Man City boss Enzo Maresca publicly called out the 24-year-old’s application in training.Last summer, Arsenal fans angered by Madueke’s impending £52million transfer launched a petition with the title #NOTOMADUEKE that attracted over 5,000 signatures.Madueke has been leaned on heavily by Tuchel due to Saka’s fitness issuesGettyHowever, less than a year later, the winger arrived at his debut World Cup after helping the Gunners to their first league title in 22 years.‘People love to hate him for some reason’Madueke started three of England’s first four games at the World Cup as Thomas Tuchel‘s preferred option at right wing.He won the penalty, from which Harry Kane scored the Three Lions’ first goal of the tournament in the 4-2 win over Croatia.Yet he is without a goal contribution from open play and was dropped for Arsenal teammate Bukayo Saka for the 3-2 victory over Mexico in the last-16 at the Azteca Stadium.Isaksson-Hurst added: “He’s still a developing player. He wants to get better. But you look at the Premier League, there aren’t many more direct wide players than Noni, you know. “He wants to get better. He wants to improve. And he wants to be the best version he can be. People love to hate him for some reason.”Madueke remains confident in his own ability amid doubts over his performancesGettyMadueke responded to the petition launched by Arsenal fans by hitting the ground running at the start of their title-winning season. He then scored his first international goal for England during their 5-0 thrashing of Serbia in World Cup qualifying in September. But he was booed by Chelsea fans upon his return to Stamford Bridge in November, in a move Isaksson-Hurst labelled ‘out of order’.“I think as a coach, you’re almost, you are like a bit of a mentor stroke psychologist as well,” he said of coaching Madueke during those lows.“And you’re talking to them, and it was like water off a duck’s back, though. He’s got such a strong mindset.“He wants to be one of the best players in the world. You play at one of the biggest clubs, you’re going to be open to that sort of thing.“And he responded, you know, he started that season last year as one of the best players and had a great run.”World Cup WhatsAppDon't miss an update from talkSPORT in our dedicated World Cup WhatsApp channel.Search for ‘talkSPORT World Cup’ in your ‘Updates’ tab on WhatsApp and we’ll drop the proper, unfiltered football chat straight to your lock screen—no fluff, just pure talkSPORT energy. It’s where you’ll find out all the new rules to watch out for, England and Scotland reaction and big match player ratings.
