A shallow magnitude 3.8 earthquake was reported early morning near Chania, Crete, Greece.According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Wednesday, July 8th, 2026, at 1:18 am local time at a shallow depth of 10.70 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.1, The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) at magnitude 3.9, The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 3.6, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) at magnitude 3.6, and The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 3.7.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Limeniskos (pop. 40) located 8 km from the epicenter, and Kissamos (pop. 4,200) 15 km away.Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Palaiochora (pop. 2,400) located 35 km from the epicenter, Galatas (pop. 3,200) 43 km away, Daratsos (pop. 4,700) 44 km away, Perivolia (pop. 3,300) 46 km away, Mournies (pop. 5,300) 48 km away, and Chania (pop. 53,900) 49 km away.Earthquake data: Date & time: Jul 8, 2026 01:18 am (GMT +3) local time (7 Jul 2026 22:18 GMT)Magnitude: 3.8Depth: 10.70 kmEpicenter latitude / longitude: 35.51°N / 23.49°E (Dimos Kissamos, Crete, Greece)Primary data source: EMSC
