One of many very unfortunate side effects of Sony’s massively unpopular decision to stop printing new games on discs in 2028 is that everyone else is getting caught in the crossfire of angry gamers. Try looking at a social media post from PlayStation or any of its subsidiaries over the past week, and you will see a deluge of (rightfully) upset players letting their voices be heard loud and clear that they are against the anti-consumer move. Case in point: God of War Laufey’s devs at Santa Monica Studio. Image via Sony Today, the studio posted about an upcoming panel for the game that will take place at San Diego Comic-Con in two weeks. “Forging God of War’s Next Heroes” will feature appearances by head of creative Cory Barlog, game director Ariel Lawrence, and voice actors Deborah Ann Woll (Faye), Christopher Judge (Kratos), Jack Quad (Phranque), and Perlina Lau (Rue). It sounds like it’ll be a great time…except, all anyone in the replies seemed to care about was letting the studio know it wants the game on a disc. The devs were forced to respond by confirming (in a follow-up post 33 minutes later) that God of War Laufey will indeed be available in physical form. I didn’t really have any doubts about this, personally, but it’s good news. And the news seemingly confirms that the game will be launching either this year or next, with the latter being way more likely, considering that Sony said new games will stop coming to discs in 2028. That’s cool and all, but the fact that Santa Monica Studio had to say that at all is a product of the ire of PS5 players everywhere. And that ire is completely misdirected when it comes to people getting pissy in the comments Angry gamers can’t seem to comprehend that the decision to ditch disc entirely most likely came from the tippy top of the chain at Sony, and getting nasty with developers working on games for the console is pointless. Do you really think that game developers want their games to be less accessible, or digital-only at all? We can confirm God of War Laufey will be available on disc.— Santa Monica Studio – God of War Laufey (@SonySantaMonica) July 10, 2026 And yet, I can’t fault the upset gamers at all. The blame lies directly on Sony for allowing their devs and partners to face the fire that they did not start whatsoever. Unfortunately, we are all at the mercy of Sony’s decision for now, and the only thing left to do is let them know how you really feel with your money: buy physical, or not at all. God of War Laufey, meanwhile, is looking promising for its assumed launch some time in 2027, but we’ll have to wait for official confirmation on that.0The post God of War Laufey devs respond to PlayStation’s discless drama with welcome confirmation appeared first on Destructoid.
