Karungi manufactures quality cleaning and personal care products for local consumersBuilding a product and building a business are rarely the same thing. One requires an idea, a formulation and a market need. The other demands certification, production discipline, distribution, working capital, customer trust and the ability to keep improving long after the first sale has been made.Julia Karunji has had to build both.Bubbly Inner Beauty Limited was registered in 2016 and officially began operations in 2019, entering Uganda’s hygiene products market with a focus on manufacturing quality cleaning and personal care products for local consumers. The ambition was clear, but the early years quickly revealed the demands of operating in a sector where products must meet regulatory standards before they can reach customers and where new brands must work harder to earn trust in a market already served by established players.Bubbly Inner Beauty’s early operations were built on lean resources, with products mixed in a bucket, a part-time chemist supporting production and a salesperson introducing the products to customers. As the business gained traction, revenue was continually reinvested into expanding capacity, improving packaging, meeting certification requirements and strengthening distribution.Success created its own challenges. Growing demand meant increasing production capacity, improving distribution and building the kind of systems that could support a larger business. The focus was no longer simply on producing quality products, but on creating a company capable of sustaining growth. That is where dfcu Bank became an important part of the story; Julia became part of dfcu’s women-focused enterprise ecosystem through the Advancing Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) programme, which supports women-owned businesses with mentorship, networking, business development and access to opportunities that help entrepreneurs prepare for larger markets. For a manufacturer trying to strengthen production, improve distribution and think more strategically about expansion, that support provided more than visibility. It placed her within a community of women entrepreneurs navigating many of the same challenges around growth, systems and scale.Karungi says she learnt a lot from dfcu’s networking sessions“Being part of the dfcu network showed me that many of the challenges I was facing were not unique. Learning from other entrepreneurs gave me practical ideas that I have been able to apply in growing Bubbly Inner Beauty.”Through AWE, dfcu works alongside partners to support women-owned businesses and increase their participation in larger commercial supply chains.AWE also connected Julia to dfcu’s broader Women in Business platform, one of Uganda’s longest-running women-focused enterprise programs. The Bank’s specialised support speaks directly to the realities facing women entrepreneurs in Uganda. Women own close to 40% of businesses in the country yet many continue to face barriers. For businesses in manufacturing, those barriers can be even more demanding because expansion requires equipment, technical skills, reliable supply chains, working capital and the ability to maintain consistent product quality as volumes increase.Karungi’s Bubbly Inner Beauty is now a household name thanks to dfcu supportBubbly Inner Beauty now operates a mechanised manufacturing process, employs more than ten people and has invested in delivery infrastructure. Julia’s next priority is to invest in additional manufacturing machinery, increase production capacity and expand beyond Kampala so that the business can serve a wider market.“The resilience, growth and willingness to keep learning from other dfcu entrepreneurs inspires me every day.”Bubbly Inner Beauty’s growth is a story of a Ugandan manufacturer building the systems required to compete in a demanding market, supported by a Bank that has made women’s enterprise development a long-term priority.Through dfcu’s Women in Business ecosystem and its role in AWE, Julia has gained access to the kind of networks, learning and business support that help small enterprises prepare for scale, ultimately creating stronger local brands that can serve more customers across Uganda. The post Building Brilliance: How Julia Karungi Grew Her Hygiene Business Through dfcu Bank’s Women-Focused Program appeared first on Business Focus.
