Malta has been ranked among the European Union countries with the least seasonal tourism, according to new figures published by Eurostat. The latest data shows that just 21.9% of all overnight stays in tourist accommodation in Malta during 2025 took place in July and August, the two busiest tourism months across Europe. That gives Malta the lowest level of tourism seasonality in the EU, ahead of Germany (24.0%) and Finland (24.1%).Across the European Union, an average of 31.1% of all overnight stays were recorded during July and August, highlighting how many destinations continue to rely heavily on the summer season.Countries with the strongest seasonal peaks included Croatia, where more than half (54.5%) of all overnight stays were concentrated in July and August. Bulgaria (43.4%) and Greece (41.6%) also recorded high levels of seasonal tourism.Eurostat noted that tourism patterns are shaped by a combination of climate, geography, school holidays and cultural factors.August remained the busiest tourism month across the EU in 2025, recording 3.6 times more overnight stays than January, the quietest month of the year. In Croatia, overnight stays in August were more than 41 times higher than in January, while Greece saw a ratio of 20.5 to one.For Malta, the figures suggest the islands continue to attract visitors more evenly throughout the year, reducing reliance on the traditional summer peak and supporting a more year-round tourism industry. The figures form part of Eurostat’s first harmonised European indicators on sustainable tourism, which include seasonality as a key measure of the sector’s long-term sustainability.Credit: Eurostat•
