Mauricio Pochettino could target shock international job or return to Premier League after USA’s World Cup exit

Wait 5 sec.

Mauricio Pochettino’s future looks to lie elsewhere after the USA were dumped out of their home World Cup by Belgium.Pochettino was aiming to become the first manager since Bruce Arena in 2002 to lead the States into the World Cup quarter-finals, but the co-hosts’ campaign ended in miserable fashion as Belgium ran out 4-1 winners in Seattle. The USA will play no further part in their home World CupGettyPochettino ‘expected to go’The last-16 tie was played amid the major controversy surrounding Donald Trump’s intervention to have Folarin Balogun’s one-match ban suspended by FIFA – a move which ultimately did not pay off.Pochettino’s side were briefly level in the first half through Malik Tillman’s deflected free-kick but ultimately capitulated as Rudi Garcia’s Belgium proved far too strong for them. And defeat could spell the end of Pochettino’s time in charge of the USA.The former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain boss is out of contract, and talkSPORT’s Ben Jacobs revealed the Argentine is likely to move on. He said: “Poch’s contract is up and the expectation is that he will go because he’s kind of been meeting with and flirting with club jobs including Milan.“But that’s now gone to Ruben Amorim and that was only two-three weeks before the tournament.“My feeling is that if Thomas Tuchel left England – but it’s not looking likely now because they did amazing against Mexico – but that would be a job that he [Pochettino] would quite like, so don’t rule out him seeking job opportunities in international as well as domestic football.“And Pochettino still has a place in London – he loves it there and he’s got unfinished business with the Premier League.”However, the USA want to keep hold of Pochettino for the foreseeable future, covering the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.“There’s a four-year contract on the table and he could do World Cup qualifying and it would be assumed he would lead the team at LA [Olympics] as well,” Jacobs added.“So that’s high profile; it’s well funded; it’s well paid. So, let’s see whether he decides this project is something he wants to double down on or if, as expected before the tournament, he just leaves and then the US Men’s National Team [USMNT] will be looking for another manager.”Pochettino previously guided the USA to the final of the 2025 CONCACAF Gold CupGettyPoch giving nothing awaySpeaking after the loss to Belgium, Pochettino remained tight-lipped on his future. He told reporters: “Now is not a moment to talk about that.“I think now is a moment to see, to assess the tournament. “You know, I’m sure in the next weeks we can start to talk if [the United States Soccer Federation] wants to talk.”Pochettino succeeded Gregg Berhalter following a two-game interim spell by Mikey Varas. He reportedly became the highest-paid boss in the history of the USMNT.Despite crashing out in the round of 16, Pochettino’s three wins at the 2026 World Cup saw him set a new record for victories by a US manager in the competition.World Cup WhatsAppDon't miss an update from talkSPORT in our dedicated World Cup WhatsApp channel.Search for ‘talkSPORT World Cup’ in your ‘Updates’ tab on WhatsApp and we’ll drop the proper, unfiltered football chat straight to your lock screen—no fluff, just pure talkSPORT energy. It’s where you’ll find out all the new rules to watch out for, England and Scotland reaction and big match player ratings.
