This year, the horror genre has taken over theaters, and one of the biggest box office stories is Corey Barker’s Obsession. The director’s debut film follows two friends, Bear and Nikki, played by Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette, respectively. Bear has a crush on Nikki that he hesitates to reveal. Instead of professing, he uses a magic charm called “One Wish Willow,” wishing for her to “love him more than anything else in the world.” Naturally, this comes with devastating consequences. While Bear initially is thrilled that Nikki is returning his affections, her obsession with him quickly becomes destructive. The movie explores toxic relationships and the danger of Bear’s wish. His lack of consideration for Nikki, who occasionally breaks free from the wish to beg for release, leads to even more violence for the people around them. Bear eventually pays a price for his cowardice and selfishness, but Nikki is left with the aftermath.According to Variety, the movie was acquired for $14 million at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival after being made for $1 million. It has now grossed $370 million worldwide. Barker’s next movie, Anything but Ghosts, is hotly anticipated and stars Aaron Paul and Bryce Dallas Howard. He’ll also be directing the reboot of A24’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.Because of its success, Obsession’s digital release date was delayed. But there are finally plans for a streaming release. The film Obsession will begin streaming on Peacock starting July 17. It can be watched with a Peacock subscription, which has monthly subscriptions starting at $7.99.Watch Here
