Almost nine years after Daphne Caruana Galizia was assassinated, people across Europe once again took to the streets to make one message clear: the demand for justice has not gone away.From Paris and Berlin to The Hague, Brussels and Dublin, Maltese communities living abroad were joined by local supporters as they gathered to remember the slain journalist and renew calls for full accountability over her assassination.The demonstrations coincided with a major protest in Valletta, where thousands came together to honour Daphne’s memory and demand justice nearly a decade after her killing.Across several European capitals, protesters gathered outside Maltese embassies carrying placards and banners bearing calls for justice. The programme also included a poem read by Maltese writer Clare Azzopardi and an address by Dutch citizen and family friend Marjoleine Meijer.Meanwhile, the Brussels demonstration drew representatives from international organisations working in defence of journalists and press freedom, including the European Federation of Journalists.The gatherings formed part of a continent-wide show of solidarity, bringing together Maltese people overseas and Europeans who continue to follow the fight for accountability surrounding Daphne’s assassination.Following the demonstrations, the Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation thanked those who turned up across Europe, paying tribute to every person who took the time to stand publicly for justice.Nine years on, the vigils sent the same message from Valletta to capitals across Europe: Daphne has not been forgotten, and neither have the calls for justice.Credit: The Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation, Justine Ellul•
