Thousands took to the streets of Valletta last night, marching in solidarity with the family of assassinated journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia and renewing calls for justice and accountability.The demonstration came two weeks after a jury acquitted Yorgen Fenech of complicity in Caruana Galizia’s murder and criminal association, with the jury returning an 8-1 not guilty verdict on both charges.What would ordinarily have been the monthly vigil marking 107 months since Caruana Galizia’s assassination instead became a larger solidarity protest organised by Repubblika and Occupy Justice, with support from a number of civil society organisations. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovin Malta (@lovinmalta)Crowds initially gathered outside Parliament before making their way through the capital towards Caruana Galizia’s memorial outside the law courts.Drums accompanied the march as chants of “justice” and “mafia” echoed through Valletta, while demonstrators carried placards bearing messages including “Justice Denied”, “End Impunity” and “We Will Not Look The Other Way”.The march eventually reached the Great Siege Monument, where Caruana Galizia’s memorial has stood as a focal point for vigils and demonstrations in the years since her assassination.Last night’s scenes saw people once again fill the capital’s streets nearly nine years after Caruana Galizia was killed by a car bomb outside her Bidnija home on 16th October 2017.Here’s a look back at the protest through the lens.•
