The 2030 FIFA World Cup may be four years away, but the early preparation to determine who could potentially be on the U.S. Men’s National Team’s squad there starts now. Mauricio Pochettino went with a mix of youth and experience in his 28-player roster on Thursday ahead of the upcoming two-week international break. Peru, Chile, Mexico, and Canada will all oppose the Americans during the September-October window, with each team providing a different challenge for Pochettino and his players. Cavan Sullivan, Julian Hall, and Mathis Albert were among the talented prospects called in for the first time while veterans Chris Richards, Tyler Adams, and Ricardo Pepi bring stability to the mix. Pochettino admitted that all 28 players were brought into camp due to different circumstances, but also believes it’s a great opportunity to analyze for the future. “I think after the World Cup, we start to change and to see and to analyze all the players, potential player[s] for this camp,” Pochettino said during a press conference Thursday. “Like always I say, I think the 28 players that are going to be involved in these four games for different circumstances are the best players, or the player that we want to see, and they want to play, that we want to work, and that’s it.”As the early stages of the new European club season continue, four key faces of the USMNT program have been left out. Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Tim Weahand Folarin Balogun were all left out of Pochettino’s first post-World Cup roster, with all four undergoing different circumstances abroad. Weah has played in every match for Marseille in Ligue 1, while Pulisic has only just logged his first two appearances of AC Milan’s campaign. McKennie missed the last few Juventus matches due to a muscle injury but returned to the squad on Thursday for UEFA Europa League action. Balogun, who walked away from a Deadline Day transfer to Everton, is dealing with a slight leg injury at AS Monaco and still seeking his first minutes of the new campaign. Pochettino isn’t too concerned with the absentees this month, focusing more on the players that are available. “I think it’s not a point that now, the first camp of this new cycle, start to explain why is one, why is not another, because if not, maybe we spend one hour here all day,” Pochettino said. “Why not maybe 100 players that are not in the squad and why are another 28? I think always [the way] we work is to try to call the players that we believe that are the best for this roster for when we analyze all the circumstances and that’s it.“I think the most important is, like I [said] one week ago, 10 days ago, [it’s a] fresh start,” he added. “I think now it’s completely different approach than was in the past. The World Cup is in four years. We need to work with different objectives and goals and for different reasons that [this] roster is the best roster that we can design for this camp.”
