She was up for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for playing Janine Teagues, Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for the season 5 episode “Team Building,” and Outstanding Comedy Series as an executive producer.This year’s recognition brings Brunson to 15 career Emmy nominations. She has won twice: first, for writing the Abbott Elementary pilot in 2022, and again for playing Janine in 2023.Five seasons into the series, Brunson hasn’t lost sight of how unusual its continued awards season success is. Speaking to Extra at the Television Academy’s Televerse festival in August, she reflected on returning to the Emmys year after year. “It’s been an honor to not only have been nominated but to continue to be nominated, to have won in different categories, and six seasons in, it’s just very exciting that we’re still here.”And Abbott isn’t slowing down. Season 6 premieres on October 7 and will include the sitcom’s 100th episode. Brunson recently told Entertainment Weekly that she wants the upcoming season to feel more purposeful after allowing the last season to wander a little more creatively.“Season 5 felt like the first time where we were, in a lot of ways, doing a filler season.” This time, she said, “I want to come in with a more direct energy.”That longevity is particularly meaningful given how strongly Brunson believed in the show before anyone had seen it. Looking back at its beginnings during the Televerse festival, she recalled realizing early on that the pieces were falling into place. “I was very excited because I felt like the show we were making was special,” she said. “And from writing the pilot to getting the room to getting the cast, it felt like we actually had something very unique.”
