Task trained dogs are usually trained to recognize the beginning of or the handler’s precursors to events that are disruptive to functional everyday life (events like panic or anxiety attacks, PTSD flashbacks, dissociative events, etc) and interrupt those events either before they start or in the very early phases, thus reducing the frequency and severity of attacks. Alternatively to interrupting using more subtle language (nudging, licking, etc) they can also be trained to apply deep pressure by using their body weight and laying on the handler. Psychiatric service dogs can also be trained to interrupt self-harming or repetitive behaviours. They can also be trained to do tasks like crowd control (for people who have issues with personal space or crowds), interrupting nightmares, physically guiding the handler to a safe place, etc. And of course, because they’re properly trained for public access they have basic hygienic and behavioural requirements that basic pets do not have. I do find it super sus that they didn’t dictate what their needs were more extensively since they’re asking for such a large amount of money. There should be more accountability on their end for sure.
