Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell placed the blame on his own shoulders for his team’s 41-31 loss to the Buffalo Bills. For the marquee Thursday Night Football matchup under the lights of the brand new $2.1 billion Highmark Stadium for the very first time, the Lions were unable to dampen the mood of the Bills Mafia. The Lions defense struggled to stop the rampant Bills offenseGettyJosh Allen and co jumped out of the blocks, racing to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter before Jared Goff‘s 11-yard pass to Jahmyr Gibbs with five minutes to go before half-time cut into the deficit. But the damage had already been done, and despite Goff’s 327-yard and four touchdown performance, the Bills’ franchise quarterback refused to take his foot off the gas. The 2024 NFL MVP finished his night having completed 20-of-31 passing for 248 yards and three touchdowns through the air, tacking on an additional two scores with his legs.In doing so, he notched his fourth career five-touchdown performance. After the game, Lions linebacker Campbell was visibly distraught over his own performance in the defeat. “I’m gonna be honest with you,” Campbell told reporters in the locker room. “Hats off to them. [But we] played terrible. It starts with me and I feel like it’s on me.“I gotta be better, and I ain’t got no other thing to do [than] to look in the mirror and be better, so that’s really where it starts. It starts with us, but yeah, they did a good job.”According to Pro Football Focus, Campbell led the league in run stops last season with 44, which saw him earn a four-year, $81 million extension. “It’s my fault,” Campbell added when asked why this particular loss hurt him so much. “I just know what everyone puts into it, and I feel like it’s my job to go out there and play at the highest level and [have] the highest standard. You just feel like you’re letting your teammates down, honestly. That’s what it is. I’ve just got to be better. But again, I’m gonna look in the mirror, I ain’t gonna run from it.”Lions defense could become cause for concernThe Lions defense allowed 446 total yards in the game, whilst they were only able to break through the Bills’ offensive line to sack Allen twice for a total loss of five yards. On the other side of the ball, the Bills defense would get to Goff four times for a combined yardage loss of 38 yards. Despite having Campbell and All-Pro defensive end Aidan Hutchinson leading the defense, the Lions have now gone back-to-back games giving up over 400 yards. They, of course, allowed the New Orleans Saints to rally back from a 21-point deficit to force their season opener to go to overtime. Detroit narrowly escaped what would have been a record with a 31-30 victory at home after Tyler Shough was unable to complete the two-point conversion for what would have been the walk-off win.
