Historically, cosmetics companies have done this. I remember I used to buy lancome powder and at some point my sister in law went to work for them. When she told me I could bring my broken compact in and exchange it, I was surprised. I wouldn't have thought to do that, you know, because it's my fault it broke. With that in mind, I would think it reasonable to ask. It's the boyfriend who is actually out of the know here.
