Marink Reedijk led SK Beveren to an undefeated championship in the Challenger Pro League last season, but decided to sit out a season at the top level with the Belgian club. The Dutchman has since been linked to several clubs, but remains without a job for the time being. In *De Voetbalkantine*, he explains why he has no regrets about his departure despite this. In 32 matches last season, Reedijk racked up a whopping 88 points. The team won 28 times and drew four times. “We were already champions in March, but after that, thanks to our undefeated status and individual awards, we still had something to play for,” the 35-year-old coach recalls. The energy within the team was so high that they managed to maintain that undefeated streak. “It was up to the players,” Reedijk continues. “The guys unanimously said they wanted to keep going. That’s why we didn’t just keep celebrating or start making substitutions.” The coach, who had previously worked in the youth systems at Ajax, West Brom, and Anderlecht, reached an unusual conclusion after that remarkable season: he decided to leave. “I made that decision then, and I was fully committed to it at the time. And I still am. When you take on a role, you have to be 100 percent committed to it, and at that moment, I wasn’t.” So he haven’t signed a contract with a new employer since then. “I don’t think I’m too demanding, but there has to be someone who’s willing to give my profile a chance. I’m not a former player, and I’m still young. So a club would have to fully commit to that. That hasn’t happened yet. But what hasn’t happened yet might still happen.” submitted by /u/Roller95 [link] [comments]
