The Commissioner of Domestic Tax Revenue at the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Dr Martin Kolbil Yamborigya, has warned businesses with annual taxable turnover exceeding GH¢750,000 to register for Value Added Tax (VAT) and comply with the provisions of the Value Added Tax Act, 2025 (Act 1151).Dr Yamborigya said businesses engaged in taxable activities that exceed the prescribed threshold are legally required to register and charge VAT.“Once you make taxable sales or taxable turnover exceeding GH¢750,000, you are required to register,” he said.Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday, September 15, he cautioned businesses against deliberately refusing to register, stressing that such a decision would not remove their tax liability.“Even if you refuse to register, by law, we still consider you registered and liable to charge the tax,” Dr Yamborigya explained. He added that businesses that fail to register could be required to pay taxes they should have collected on behalf of government. As part of the GRA’s VAT education and compliance campaign, officials will visit selected business premises to check registration, invoicing and tax compliance. The Authority will also monitor whether businesses are charging the correct tax and issuing Commissioner-approved VAT invoices.Dr Yamborigya urged consumers to support the campaign by demanding proper VAT invoices whenever they make taxable purchases.“Any time you buy something from somebody, whether it is goods or services, always insist on your VAT invoice first,” he advised. He said the initial focus would be on education and helping taxpayers comply with the law, but warned that deliberate non-compliance could attract penalties, interest and other enforcement measures.
