Catarina Macario’s wait to debut for the San Diego Wave will frustratingly continue. Macario was placed on the NWSL’s Season-Ending Injury List (SEI) as she continues rehabilitation for an ongoing knee issue, the Wave announced Monday. The U.S. Women’s National Team forward joined San Diego from WSL giants Chelsea in March, but has been sidelined since December 2025. “We made a significant long-term commitment to Cat because we believe in her ability to make a lasting impact on this club,” said San Diego Wave FC General Manager and Sporting Director Camille Ashton. “While we are disappointed that she will not be available this season, we are focused on her health and on supporting her throughout this process.”Macario was limited to just 12 appearances for Chelsea last season due to a knee injury before making the move to the NWSL in a permanent transfer. The 26-year-old scored 15 goals and added 13 assists in 59 appearances for Chelsea in three seasons. Prior to transferring to England, Macario excelled for French giants Lyon, scoring 29 goals.“I’m obviously disappointed that I won’t have the opportunity to represent the club on the field this season, especially with how much it means to me to be back home in San Diego,” said Macario. “But the club and I have made a long-term commitment to each other and are focused on the big picture. My focus is on continuing my recovery so that when I do return, I can feel like myself again and give the team and our fans the best version of me.”Macario’s injury woes have not only hampered her time at club level, but also with the USWNT. The veteran forward has not appeared in Emma Hayes’ squad this season and will likely miss the October pair of friendlies against No. 1-ranked Spain. The San Diego Wave are sitting fourth in the NWSL standings with six matches left to play.
