A stampede broke out as students tried to escape, leaving dozens injured. Some of the victims were trapped inside Furaha secondary school and suffocated.The cause of the fire remains unknown.Families, teachers and residents gathered to mourn the students as officials laid wreaths and addressed the crowd.Among those buried was 13-year-old Tuonane Machara wa Kidogo. His grandmother, Annunciat Kujirabwinja Zagabe, said she had recently encouraged him to continue working hard at school.“He left home for school and simply died. It is horrific,” she said.Teacher Alice Ambika Musafiri also broke down as she recalled students crying for help during the stampede. She said she was able to rescue some children but could not reach others trapped in the crowd.Bukavu has been under the control of the M23 rebel movement since February 2025.
