European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has delivered a strong message on the murder of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia during her State of the Union address at the European Parliament on Wednesday. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovin Malta (@lovinmalta)Speaking hours before the protest, von der Leyen recalled visiting her memorial with her family five years ago and their hope that justice would soon be delivered.“Today, it is disheartening to see that the pursuit of justice is not over yet,” von der Leyen told MEPs.Her comments come two weeks after a Maltese jury acquitted Yorgen Fenech by eight votes to one of complicity in Caruana Galizia’s wilful homicide and of criminal association. The verdict has renewed debate over accountability in the case.Von der Leyen also pointed towards Caruana Galizia’s legacy in shaping European protections for journalists, saying it had helped inspire the European Media Freedom Act.“Daphne devoted her entire life to seeking the truth, and now truth must prevail,” she said.She concluded with a direct message on accountability: “There can be no impunity for Daphne’s murder.”Video: Multimedia centre•
