Maltese expats and representatives from some of Europe’s leading press freedom organisations gathered in Brussels on Wednesday morning, calling for “full justice” for Daphne Caruana Galizia and expressing solidarity with her family.The demonstration comes two weeks after a Maltese jury acquitted businessman Yorgen Fenech of both charges he faced in connection with the journalist’s 2017 assassination. Fenech had been accused of complicity in her murder and criminal association, and was found not guilty by an 8-1 jury vote on both counts.Speaking during the Brussels protest, Tom Gibson, the Committee to Protect Journalists’ lead advocate in Brussels, described the gathering as part of an “international condemnation of the fact that we don’t have full justice” for Caruana Galizia.“There is an outpouring of emotion,” Gibson said, arguing that the case has implications extending beyond Malta to the wider fight against impunity for the killing of journalists across Europe.Gibson also criticised what he described as a lack of meaningful action by Maltese authorities on calls for media reform and follow-up to recommendations emerging from the public inquiry into Caruana Galizia’s assassination.“We want full justice. We have to carry on working till we get full justice,” he said.“And we have to make sure that we, in the future, can sit here, stand here, and say we fought for justice, for Daphne’s legacy, and finally got it.”Representatives from the European Federation of Journalists, International Federation of Journalists, Committee to Protect Journalists, Reporters Without Borders and Balkan Free Media Initiative were among those attending the demonstration.The Brussels gathering forms part of a wider series of solidarity actions taking place across Europe on Wednesday, with protests also planned in Berlin, Paris, The Hague and Dublin.Meanwhile, a protest organised by Repubblika is set to take place in Valletta at 7pm, with a number of Maltese NGOs and organisations backing the demonstration.Nearly nine years after Caruana Galizia was assassinated in a car bombing, five people have been convicted for roles in carrying out the killing and procuring the bomb, but nobody has been convicted of commissioning her murder.What do you make of this?Photo credits to European Federation of Journalists – EFJ•
