From the future of Malta’s cities to fashion, food and craftsmanship, four thematic events are set to take centre stage as designMT returns to Valletta later this month.Malta’s premier design expo will return for its third edition between 28th September and 3rd October, bringing together contemporary design, craftsmanship and creative practice across the capital.Organised by the Malta Crafts Foundation, designMT combines exhibitions showcasing work by established practitioners, emerging designers, artisans and students with a series of events designed to spark conversations about where different areas of design are heading. This year, four thematic events will explore spatial design, craftsmanship, food and drink, and fashion, bringing practitioners, stakeholders and audiences together to discuss how each field is evolving. The programme kicks off on 29th September with Spatial Design – Re-Design: Citizens and the City at the Italian Cultural Institute, exploring urban life and people-centred approaches to cities through both Maltese and Italian perspectives. This event is held in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy in Malta, ITA – Italian Trade Agency Desk in Malta, and the Italian Cultural Institute. The following day, Made by Design – Made to Matter at Spazju Kreattiv will delve into the relationship between craft, materials, technology, sustainability and innovation.Food and drink will then enter the spotlight on 1st October at The Malta Chamber with Flavour by Design – Designed to Delight. The event will look behind the creative process of artisan food and drink, from developing a product to its branding and presentation. Finally, Maltese fashion designers will take centre stage on 2nd October at Spazju Kreattiv for Fashion Design – Behind the Collection, exploring the ideas, processes and craftsmanship that go into creating their collections.Rather than conventional lectures, the four events are intended to create opportunities for conversations between those working within the industries, stakeholders and the wider public about current developments, challenges and opportunities.designMT 2026 is organised by the Malta Crafts Foundation with support from Arts Council Malta, Heritage Malta, the Industrial Property Registrations Unit within the Commerce Department, Malta Enterprise and the Malta Tourism Authority.
