Timo Werner has opened up on his 18-month loan spell at Tottenham and why the club decided against signing him permanently.Werner spent 18 months on loan at Spurs, joining the club in January of 2023 and leaving at the end of the 2024-25 season as a Europa League winner. The 29-year-old ended up playing 27 games for Ange Postecoglou’s men in his only full season at Tottenham, mainly due to the club’s injury crisis. He had a shocking return of just one goal and three assists in those matches, which is why it did not come as a surprise when Spurs decided against activating their option to buy the forward.Photo by Carl Recine/Getty ImagesTimo Werner says he has positive memories of his Tottenham spellThe 30-year-old’s lack of end product left Spurs fans frustrated, and that has been a theme throughout his career, especially his time in the Premier League.Werner, who is now at MLS side San Jose Earthquakes, revealed that overall, he still views his time in North London positively, despite the various challenges. When asked about his spell at Spurs, the German international told Transfermarkt: “Things just weren’t going well there overall. On top of that, I was on loan, which always makes things a bit more difficult for a player.“They simply wanted to go in a different direction: spend more money, rejuvenate the squad. I had to accept that decision. These are strategic decisions a club has to make. I enjoyed my first year there, and I contributed. I look back on my time there positively.”Spurs told they may have signed another Werner this summerChelsea legend Pat Nevin has accused Tottenham of repeating the same mistake they made with Werner this summer. The pundit has likened Spurs’ signing of Mykhailo Mudryk to the Werner deal, suggesting that the Lilywhites have taken a big gamble on the Ukrainian. He said: “I can see why Chelsea let Mykhailo Mudryk go because he just wasn’t going to get a game for them.“In the position he plays, it wasn’t going to work, he wasn’t going to get a sniff. So he needed to get out there and find somewhere to play, especially having not played regular games for a long time.“It almost reminds me of the Timo Werner situation, where Tottenham have brought in a flawed player who never really hit the heights with Chelsea compared to what the expectations were. It wasn’t really working for him at Chelsea even before the loan move. Can the manager get something out of him at Spurs? Well, he believes he can, and he knows him quite well.“But if I’m asked to tell Spurs fans, ‘You’ve got a cracker there, don’t worry, he’s going to do it,’ I’m afraid I can’t say that. He simply hasn’t done enough in English football to prove that yet, although he certainly has ability.”Mudryk picked up an ankle injury after making his Tottenham debut, and now faces six to eight weeks on the sidelines.READ MORE: Tottenham fans will love what Mikey Moore just said about his future plansThe post Timo Werner gives interesting assessment of his Tottenham career, just as Spurs repeat the trick appeared first on Spurs Web.
