Credit: Wikimedia CommonsSweden is poised for a return to left-wing government after a Social Democrat-led opposition bloc narrowly defeated the country’s conservative government in one of the closest elections in its history.With virtually all votes counted, the opposition parties have secured a preliminary 176 seats in Sweden’s 349-seat parliament, compared with 173 for the governing right-wing bloc.Sweden’s official Election Authority will not certify the final result until this weekend. The result puts former Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson in pole position to return to power, four years after her Social Democrats were forced into opposition.The left wing won the recent election in Sweden because of the Muslim immigrant votes. The Left Party picked up six seats, and the Greens gained four. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson’s Moderate Party received just under 20 percent and 70 seats.The conservative Sweden Democrats suffered the biggest setback, falling to around 17.5 percent and losing 11 seats compared with the 2022 election.The party had supported Kristersson’s government in parliament and pushed it toward significantly tougher policies on immigration and crime.Sweden is now a country of mass bombings, mass immigration, and gang wars. By 2050, only 24 years from now, Pew Research estimate that if Sweden maintains mass migration then 1 in every 3 people will follow Islam. And many Swedes just voted to keep going in that direction.— Matt Goodwin (@GoodwinMJ) September 15, 2026The result brings an end to four years of conservative government during which Sweden dramatically tightened its immigration policies following decades of mass migration.Yet forming a stable and long-lasting government may prove very difficult.The Centre Party has ruled out serving in a government alongside the Left Party, while the Left has insisted that it expects a place in government rather than merely providing parliamentary support.Those divisions mean Andersson must now negotiate an arrangement capable of keeping together four parties with significant disagreements on policy.The margin is also extremely narrow. According to Reuters, only around 26,000 votes separated the two blocs as the count neared completion. The Swedish Election Authority said the definitive allocation of seats will be announced once the final count is completed this weekend.
