Venezia is bottom of the Serie A table in its return to the top flight and will now be without its captain for the foreseeable future.American midfielder Gianluca Busio has been diagnosed with an intratendinous strain in his right thigh, the Italian club announced Tuesday. Venezia did not provide a timetable for Busio’s return, but he could miss up to two months due to the injury.“The player has already begun his rehabilitation process and his condition will be monitored by the Club’s medical staff,” a statement read.Busio left last Friday’s 4-2 loss to Fiorentina in the 44th minute due to the injury, being helped off the field by two Venezia staff members. The American midfielder assisted on Akor Adams’ opening goal of the match, but Fiorentina would eventually rally and walk away with three points. Busio, 24, helped Venezia win the Serie B title last season, earning a second promotion with the club since his arrival in 2021. A former Sporting KC homegrown, Busio has made 175 appearances for Venezia and previously partnered fellow U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder Tanner Tessmann.His injury also comes at a frustrating time for him ahead of the USMNT’s first post-World Cup window. Mauricio Pochettino’s men will play four friendlies over a two-week span, starting with a friendly against Peru in Orlando, Florida on September 26. Venezia’s final match before the international break comes at home against Lazio on September 19, with Giovanni Strapa’s squad desperately needing a result.
