Cole Campbell’s positive start at Elversberg is not only an exciting sign for the Bundesliga club’s fans, but also for the U.S. Men’s National Team’s supporters.Campbell is still in the early weeks of his first league campaign with the newly-promoted club, most recently featuring against reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich. The 20-year-old made the move from Borussia Dortmund earlier this summer and has already registered one goal in four appearances in Vincent Wagner’s squad. Although Campbell is eligible to make a switch back to Iceland on the international level, the Texas-born attacker is only focused on representing the country of his birth. “I’ve already made my decision to switch to the US. It was for a lot of different reasons, but my future is with the U.S.,” Campbell told reporters during a conference call on Tuesday. “I have no second thoughts or anything. That’s a thing for me that is set in stone.“It was definitely the right step, and I’ve been incredibly happy with it,” Campbell added. “The support and the atmosphere around the federation have been amazing. The coaches I’ve had, the people I’ve had the honor of working with have been great.”Campbell previously featured for the Iceland U-17 team from 2021-2023 before later representing the USMNT U-19’s, U-20’s, U-21’s and U-23’s in recent years. He scored twice at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup and is one of several young prospects that could earn a first senior call-up in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad later this week. Should Campbell not get the call for September and October’s quartet of friendlies, there will be multiple competitions on the USMNT’s horizon over the next few years, including the CONCACAF Nations League, Gold Cup, and World Cup Qualifying. Campbell revealed his excitement to play for the USMNT, but is remaining focused on only what he can control.“I’m hoping,” Campbell said about earning a USMNT call up. “We will see what happens. I’m just focused on trying to perform the best that I can, and I’m praying that hopefully I get my first call-up soon. I grew up in this country, so it would be an honor. It would be a dream come true for me to represent my country.”
