Your Security Camera’s Video Storage May Be Its Most Important Feature. Here’s What You Need to Know.

Many home security cameras and doorbell cameras can record both audio and video. But how, where, and (most importantly) how long they store those recordings can vary. If your security camera has the wrong data-storage system, it could be providing decoration rather than protection. There are two types of video storage for Wi-Fi security cameras: local and cloud. Local storage cameras save your recordings to the camera’s built-in storage, a removable microSD card, or a networked device inside your home. Cameras that rely on cloud storage transfer all of your recordings via the internet to a remote server (that’s what the “cloud” part refers to), usually operated by the camera manufacturer. Both options allow you to access your recordings from a smartphone app (or sometimes a web browser), whether you are at home or away.
