Ahead of this weekend’s meeting at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, we have picked a combined XI from Spurs and Aston Villa based on current form, availability and performances so far this season.Tottenham Hotspur remain without a win and without a goal scored after four games of the Premier League campaign. They also come into Saturday’s fixture after a cup heartbreak in midweek, having been knocked out of the Carabao Cup in the third round by Liverpool, and they will be desperate to put an end to this miserable run when Aston Villa visit North London.The visitors are not in a much better position either. In fact, they sit two places below Tottenham in the Premier League table at 19th, with Villa also still searching for their first league win.Villa are going through a period of significant transition after losing several important players during the summer, but they have also brought in a number of exciting new ones. With that in mind, here is how we would line up the two squads based on what they have shown so far.Credit: @thefrederikkejensen / InstagramCombined Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa XI based on this seasonGoalkeeper: Zion SuzukiThe £30m summer signing has arguably been one of Aston Villa’s better performers during their difficult start to the campaign. Suzuki has conceded just three goals across the three Premier League matches he has started, keeping one clean sheet in the process.Antonin Kinsky has kept two clean sheets for Tottenham, but he has not had to make as many saves as the Japanese goalkeeper. Suzuki’s save percentage currently stands at 76.9 per cent, with 10 saves, compared with Kinsky’s 64.3 per cent and 9 saves. (FotMob)That makes this a fairly straightforward choice based on what we have seen so far.Right-back: Pedro PorroPedro Porro may not yet be back to 100 per cent fitness after missing Tottenham’s last two matches against Everton and Liverpool, but Roberto De Zerbi has confirmed that he is available to feature this weekend.Even if he is not quite at full sharpness, Porro still gets the nod over Villa’s summer loan signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The Spurs right-back has started two league matches this season, one in an unfamiliar right-wing role against Newcastle United and the other in his natural position against Nottingham Forest.It was in that latter game where he put up an excellent display and helped Tottenham keep a clean sheet. Wan Bissaka has also been solid for Villa, but Porro has offered more at both ends of the pitch.Centre-back: Jan Paul Van HeckeThe Dutchman has arguably been Tottenham’s best player so far this season, starting every minute of their four Premier League matches and becoming a hugely important part of the defence.Van Hecke played a major role in Tottenham keeping back-to-back clean sheets against Nottingham Forest and Everton, while also showing that he can offer something at the other end of the pitch from set pieces.Victor Lindelof has also played every minute for Villa, but the Swede has been far less convincing defensively, with nine goals conceded in the matches he has featured in this season. Van Hecke therefore gets the nod without too much debate.Centre-back: Micky Van de VenThe Tottenham captain has also been excellent alongside his Netherlands International colleague Van Hecke on the left-hand side of Tottenham’s defence, especially when they have been exposed on the counter. Van de Ven has bailed the team out on several occasions already thanks to his incredible recovery pace, and he remains one of the most reliable players in the squad when there is space behind the defence.The decision becomes even easier because Unai Emery lost Pau Torres to a hamstring injury last weekend. That leaves Matteo Ruggeri in line for his first Premier League start after joining from Atletico Madrid, having played just 23 minutes in the competition so far.Ruggeri is a solid defender, but he simply has not featured enough yet to challenge Van de Ven for this spot.Left-back: Destiny UdogieAnd that completes a clean sweep for Tottenham across the entire back four.Destiny Udogie has only started one Premier League match so far, against Nottingham Forest, but he helped Spurs keep a clean sheet that night and then produced arguably his best performance of the season against Liverpool in midweek.The Italian could easily have finished that match with two assists if Tottenham had been more clinical in front of goal. Villa have Ian Maatsen and Matty Cash as options in this area, but neither has done enough so far to displace Udogie.Centre-mid: Rodrigo BentancurRodrigo Bentancur has been Tottenham’s best player so far this season, consistently producing strong performances in the defensive midfield role. He has become an important part of De Zerbi’s system of building from the back, racking up a remarkable 43 defensive contributions across his three Premier League starts.Boubacar Kamara has been decent enough for Villa, but Bentancur has simply been operating at another level during the opening weeks of the season.Centre-mid: Mateus FernandesThe only slight doubt here is Sandro Tonali, who picked up a knock and missed Tottenham’s midweek trip to Anfield, meaning we expect the Italian to be unlikely to start on Saturday.Even before taking that into account, Mateus Fernandes probably just edges it on current form.The £85m summer signing had a disappointing outing against Everton last weekend, but that should come with an important caveat because De Zerbi deployed him in an unfamiliar number 10 role. In the matches before that, when he played in his natural number eight position, Fernandes looked excellent.Ross Barkley has probably been Villa’s best midfielder this season and made a strong case for inclusion after scoring and assisting in the midweek Carabao Cup win over Coventry. This is a very narrow decision, but Fernandes just gets the nod.No. 10: Emiliano BuendiaThere are not exactly an abundance of options here for either side. James Maddison has still not started a game this season as he continues to build his fitness, although he has looked decent in the three appearances he has made from the bench. Conor Gallagher has consequently spent a lot of time filling the number 10 role, but his performances have been poor, to put it mildly.That leaves Emiliano Buendia as the most obvious fit. His own campaign has not been spectacular by his standards, but he has at least managed to score once, doing so in the Champions League during Villa’s 3-2 victory over Club Brugge last week.Right wing: John McGinnWe would rather use Savio on the left because Mathys Tel has struggled in that position for Tottenham, and Mohammed Kudus is only just returning from his lengthy injury layoff and has not looked anywhere near his best yet.Aston Villa captain John McGinn, meanwhile, may have endured a poor start to the campaign, but he produced two goal contributions in his last 3 games and, therefore, looks the more obvious choice.Left wing: SavioSavio could easily have competed for the right-wing spot, but he is also capable of operating on the left, and we expect that is where he will play against Villa.No player in the Premier League has completed more successful dribbles per 90 minutes than the Brazilian this season (5.4), and he has been an absolute delight to watch.He already has a goal and an assist to his name and has looked a constant threat whenever he gets the ball. Villa have George Hemmings and Alejandro Garnacho as other options, while Ibrahim Mbaye is another possibility after registering an assist in midweek, although he prefers playing on the right.There is very little argument against Savio here.Striker: Nicolas JacksonMake no mistake, Omar Marmoush has been solid since joining Tottenham and has shown plenty of quality in other areas of his game. The problem is that he was primarily brought in to score goals, and that is ultimately what strikers are judged on.Marmoush has not found the net yet.Nicolas Jackson has, and that alone gives him the edge for this XI.
