Looking for something a little different to do in Valletta as the summer evenings start giving way to autumn?Deep beneath the capital’s streets, Maltese għana, acoustic music and storytelling are filling the historic vaults of Sala San Duminku, but there are now only six nights left to experience it.Following its summer launch, Folk Underground is heading into the final stretch of its 2026 season, with performances running throughout September and October before wrapping up with a special final night on 28th October.The 45-minute live experience brings together traditional Maltese għana, music and storytelling in an intimate underground setting, offering audiences a glimpse into a folk tradition passed down through generations.And if you’ve been looking for an excuse to head into Valletta, this might be it.Organisers are encouraging people to make a whole night of it: grab dinner or drinks in the capital, wander through Valletta after dark and then head beneath the city to Sala San Duminku.There’s also a bar at the venue, meaning you can arrive early, grab a drink and soak up the surroundings before the music begins.The remaining performances kick off this Wednesday 23rd September at 8.15pm, followed by another show on 30th September.October will then see performances on 7th, 11th and 14th October, before the season concludes on Wednesday 28th October with two shows at 7pm and 8.15pm.That 8.15pm performance will officially bring Folk Underground’s season to a close.At its heart, the experience is about keeping Maltese folk culture alive by taking it beyond the archive and putting it directly in front of new audiences.Because traditions survive when people continue to hear them, experience them and pass them on.Folk Underground is supported by MeDirect Malta and VisitMalta.Who are you taking underground with you this autumn?Photo credits to Elisa Von Brockdorff•
