Newcastle offside decision and the ‘delaying the offside flag’ rule

Wait 5 sec.

In the Leeds Newcastle game the visitors had an opportunity to score when Trafford seemed to make a mistake in clearing (roughly 70 mins in). The Assistant Referee put the offside flag up which obviously brought an end to the opportunity for Newcastle, but the initial take from Sky was that it wasn’t offside (another stellar decision over the last few days). I thought that officials in the PL were supposed to delay the offside flag (as explained here https://www.premierleague.com/en/news/1833470) to allow the situation to play out so that VAR can get involved if it subsequently turns out to be onside. These were also the rules of engagement during the World Cup this summer, one of the few things FIFA got right. So did the official this evening mess up in not allowing the Newcastle move to continue, or is the PL no longer following this principle of delaying the offside flag? submitted by /u/Scotchdude1979 [link] [comments]
