The Bombay High Court has denied bail to a man accused of drowning his one-month-old granddaughter because the family did not want a second girl child. Refusing relief based on the gravity of the crime, Justice M M Nerlikar lamented that gender preference for a male child persists even nearly 80 years after Independence.
