European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has urged people to attend tomorrow’s solidarity protest in Valletta following Yorgen Fenech’s acquittal, describing participation as “not only a right” but a “duty”. A jury found him not guilty by eight votes to one of complicity in the wilful homicide of Daphne Caruana Galizia and of criminal association.The gathering replaces the monthly vigil held on the 16th since Caruana Galizia’s assassination, with organisers describing this month’s event as a “solidarity protest”.Rule of law NGO Repubblika, which announced the protest, has argued that Fenech’s acquittal “cannot be the end of Malta’s reckoning”, pointing towards the findings of the Daphne public inquiry and wider questions surrounding institutional failures and impunity.Metsola will not personally attend Wednesday’s protest as she is due to welcome Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.What do you make of Metsola’s comments?Video: Multimedia Centre•
