It was supposed to be the ultimate waterslide experience.Towering 52 meters, or about 170 feet, above the ground, the attraction promised riders an extreme journey unlike anything they had experienced before. Getting to the starting point was an adventure by itself, requiring visitors to climb 264 stairs before reaching the platform.But once the ride opened, a hidden problem became impossible to ignore. A flaw in the design could send riders and their rafts dangerously into the air.The attraction was called Verrückt, which means “crazy” or “insane” in German. Built at Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Kansas City, the enormous waterslide quickly became famous for its incredible height and terrifying descent.Riders climbed all the way to the top before climbing into a raft with other passengers. From there, gravity took over, sending the raft racing down the steep slide at tremendous speed.But during the testing process, engineers encountered a serious issue. At certain points along the course, the rafts could become airborne instead of remaining securely against the slide.The solution was to surround parts of the attraction with safety netting. Metal poles were positioned to hold the netting in place and create a barrier that would supposedly stop passengers from leaving the ride.It looked like an additional layer of protection, but there was a critical weakness in that arrangement.In 2016, 10-year-old Caleb Schwab entered the attraction alongside two other riders. As their raft rushed down the course, it reached a section where the vehicle lifted from the slide.The sudden movement sent Caleb upward toward the protective netting. Instead of being safely contained, he collided with one of the metal support poles.The impact caused fatal injuries. The other two passengers were also badly hurt, suffering serious facial injuries that included a broken jaw and multiple fractures.The tragedy immediately raised questions about how such a dangerous ride had been allowed to operate.Investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the accident and identified several possible contributing factors. One involved the distribution of weight inside the raft.Caleb weighed about 33.5 kilograms, or 74 pounds. He had been positioned at the front of the raft rather than between the two heavier passengers. Investigators considered whether that arrangement may have changed the raft’s balance and affected its movement as it traveled over the elevated section.There were also significant questions about the attraction’s safety equipment. Experts argued that additional safeguards were needed, including more effective restraints and systems capable of preventing the raft from becoming airborne.After Caleb’s death, Verrückt was shut down permanently. The accident resulted in extensive legal proceedings, and Caleb’s family eventually reached a settlement involving Schlitterbahn and other parties connected to the ride’s design and operation.What had once been promoted as a record-breaking achievement became associated with one of the darkest incidents in the history of extreme amusement rides.Verrückt demonstrated that creating an attraction capable of producing an enormous thrill also requires extraordinary attention to every possible failure. A ride may be engineered to attract thousands of visitors, but speed, height, and momentum leave little room for mistakes.The attraction was designed to push the limits of excitement.Instead, its fatal flaw showed just how dangerous those limits can become when safety systems fail.
