Swieqi Deputy Mayor Jordan Galea Pace is taking his message about Malta’s tourism model directly to a British audience, after being interviewed by GB News about tourism and its impact on local communities.Galea Pace revealed the interview on social media today, saying he used the opportunity to push back against Malta being perceived simply as a destination for partying.“Malta is not just a party island,” he said.“We are a country rich in culture, history, heritage, gastronomy and world-class events.”But his message to prospective visitors also came with a warning.“Come to Malta. Enjoy Malta. Love Malta. But respect our country, our laws and the people who live here. If you don’t, there will be consequences,” Galea Pace said.The Swieqi deputy mayor has repeatedly spoken out about the impact of tourism on residents, particularly following incidents of late-night disturbances, littering and vandalism in the locality.His comments come after a summer which saw authorities respond to a number of reported incidents in Swieqi, including tourists being fined over disturbances and individuals being investigated over damage to parked cars.Galea Pace said he believes Malta should be promoted internationally as a “quality destination” rather than “a playground where anything goes”, adding that he intends to continue pushing that message both locally and overseas.“Malta deserves higher standards,” he concluded.The GB News interview is expected to be broadcast to its UK audience shortly.Will you be tuning in?•
