Tottenham were unable to break their 15-year Anfield curse on Tuesday, suffering cup heartbreak as Liverpool sent them crashing out of the Carabao Cup with a 3-1 victory.Roberto De Zerbi’s men were unlucky not to leave Anfield with anything, as they were the better side on paper, generating more xG (2.34 vs 1.52) and creating more chances than the home side. But at the end of the day, Liverpool were simply more clinical.Both managers rotated their squads heavily from the weekend’s Premier League clash, although you could argue Spurs were still arguably slightly stronger. Let’s have a look at our Liverpool 3-1 Tottenham match report.Photo by SpursWebFirst half: Liverpool 1-0 TottenhamSpurs started the game really well and should have taken the lead when Destiny Udogie sent a brilliant low cross into the box from the left, but Lucas Bergvall was denied in front of goal by an early dive from Giorgi Mamardashvili.Liverpool striker Lewis Koumas pressed high and caused problems for a Spurs backline that remained insistent on playing out from the back. He could have got on the scoresheet 15 minutes in too, but Tottenham debutant Martin Dubravka did well to deny him in a one-on-one situation.That missed chance did not bite Liverpool for too long, though, as they soon took the lead through Alexis Mac Allister. The ball rolled to the unmarked midfielder just inside the Spurs box from a Udogie tackle, and he took full advantage, curling a brilliant effort into the top corner.The Italian full-back should have had his second assist of the game before the break when he did brilliantly to race up the pitch and send another low cross into the box. Mohammed Kudus, however, somehow sent his effort over the crossbar from around six yards out.Second half: Liverpool 3-1 TottenhamNot getting that equaliser before half-time ended up hurting Spurs nine minutes into the second half when Cody Gakpo doubled Liverpool’s lead. A slick exchange of passes opened things up for the Liverpool forward, who was left unmarked by Archie Gray, giving him the space to finish from a tight angle into the far corner.That was enough for Spurs to up the tempo, and chances started to follow with Tosin Adarabioyo, Omar Marmoush and Kudus all involved. Mamardashvili had to produce a strong hand to deny the latter.The Tottenham goal eventually came from a corner when the Liverpool goalkeeper misjudged the delivery, leaving Conor Gallagher with the simplest task of nodding the ball home. Gallagherstill had a disappointing game overall, but Spurs had him to thank for getting them right back into it.Mamardashvili made much bigger amends later on, pulling off an incredible reflex save to deny Marmoush and keep Liverpool ahead. Spurs came close to finding an equaliser on multiple occasions late on, with substitute Savio perhaps coming closest when he dragged his effort wide in front of goal.It all came to nothing in stoppage time when Dominik Szoboszlai scored an absolute belter from distance.
