I grew up in Saudi Arabia. Granted, it wasn't modern Afghanistan, but Syria, Lebanon and Gaza seem to have quite a few similarities in terms of just general everyday life. Kids' dolls and characters didn't have to have veils or hijab. I did see censoring to a "The Little Mermaid" video cover, but she's wearing a shell bikini, front and centre. Only the cover was censored. My Little Pony was fairly popular. They actually showed the 80s series, and one of the then-newer ones on national TV. Plenty of items had animated human characters emblazoned across them, there were murals on kids' hospital ward walls (parents worked in the hospital) and there were cartoonish characters on health leaflets and posters.
