Five things we learned as Tottenham suffer 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa

Wait 5 sec.

Spurs suffered their third Premier League defeat of the season in their clash against Aston Villa at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.Let us take a look at five things we learned from the match:Tottenham should have been out of sight in the first halfTottenham Hotspur’s wait for a first win continues this season as they fell short once more, this time at the hands of Aston Villa. However, the 3-2 full‑time score does not tell the entire story of how things unfolded. Spurs started the match really well, especially in the first half, and could have been out of sight had they taken their chances.Savio had three good opportunities in the first half and forced three strong saves from Suzuki in the early exchanges. Archie Gray also came close after replacing Pedro Porro, but again the goalkeeper was alert to deny the Lilywhites.Tottenham ended the game with 20 shots, seven on target and one big chance missed, managing an xG of 1.22. On another day, it could well have been three points for De Zerbi’s men.Photo by Sebastian Frej/MB Media/Getty ImagesSpurs finally score their first Premier League goalWhile it was mostly frustrating for Tottenham, there was indeed a positive: Spurs finally scored a Premier League goal. After four games and six hours of football without finding the net, they ended their drought this afternoon. Tottenham thought the moment had come a lot earlier after Kudus put the ball in the back of the net early in the second half, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR check. The first goal arrived a little later, the result of a well‑worked move, with Mohammed Kudus showcasing excellent dribbling to set up a simple tap‑in for Conor Gallagher. After the first, the goals kept coming, with Jan Paul van Hecke grabbing Tottenham’s second from a set‑piece.Jan Paul Van Hecke struggles as Luka Vuskovic thrives at BrightonUnfortunately, in ironic fashion, the game in which Tottenham managed two goals was the day the defence went to sleep, despite keeping two clean sheets in their previous Premier League outings.Jan Paul van Hecke has been impressive for Spurs this season, helping with his passing from deep, contributing to build‑up play and looking solid defensively.Today, though, he produced his worst performance in a Tottenham shirt. He was easy to dribble past and struggled in duels, especially when defending high up the pitch. He made life far too easy for Villa’s attackers on several occasions, which was really disappointing. Although he grabbed a late goal, it did little to mask the issues in his performance, especially when the Dutchman’s primary responsibility is to keep things tight at the back.Of course, with each disappointing display, Tottenham fans will only wonder whether the club made the right choice in selling Luka Vuskovic, who has barely put a foot wrong at Brighton.Pedro Porro injury is a huge blow for SpursSpurs’ injury struggles this season have been far more manageable, with the number of sidelined players not hitting double figures as in previous campaigns. At the moment, just three players are out, but that number looks to have increased as Pedro Porro picked up a knock against Villa. The full‑back appeared to suffer a muscle injury early on after just 19 minutes of action. When he was on the pitch, he was one of Spurs’ most influential players; no player managed more touches than him.Hopefully it is nothing serious, and he returns after the three‑week international break.Tottenham now have three weeks to sit with their winless startIt has been a poor start to the season overall for Tottenham, who are down in 19th after five games and close to £400 million spent. This is certainly not what the club would have hoped for, but it is the reality they now face. Spurs will have to spend the next three weeks in the bottom three, ruing their winless Premier League run.Hopefully, Spurs’ fortunes turn after the break when they take on Manchester United at Old Trafford. For fans, at least there will not be another weekend ruined in that time.READ MORE: Tottenham player ratings vs Aston Villa as 7/10 star tells you everything you need to knowThe post Five things we learned as Tottenham suffer 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa appeared first on Spurs Web.
