According to Kels, who has worked part-time as a babysitter since she was a teenager, she had rarely run into major problems with the families she worked for. That apparently changed during a Saturday booking with a new client. She had other plans that night The couple, who had recently moved to the area, found Kels through word-of-mouth recommendations and booked her to watch their children from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Kels said she made her schedule clear from the start. She told the children’s mother that she had a hard stop at 7:00 p.m. because she had another babysitting job starting at 7:30 p.m. That second job was important because she had worked for the family for years, and the father had a major awards show to attend that evening. The new client assured Kels they would be home on time, if not earlier. Everything went smoothly until around 6:00 p.m., when the mother texted Kels saying they had run into some friends while out at dinner and would be late. Kels asked when she could expect them back and reminded her about the second babysitting job. The mother’s response was hard to believe. “Hard to say. But, maybe around 1:00 or 2:00 am.” Kels initially thought she was joking. But after asking for clarification, she realized the mother was serious.
