Aston Villa captain John McGinn admitted it was a “relief” to get their first win of the new Premier League season after beating Spurs 3-2 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday. The hosts started the stronger of the two teams as their high press forced errors out of the Villa defence and lead to a number of good chances. But Roberto De Zerbi’s side could not take advantage and ended up behind at the halftime break when Johan Manzambi scored deep into stoppage time. Nicolas Jackson doubled their lead in their second half with his first goal since joining the club from Chelsea before Emi Buendia piled on the misery with a beautiful finish from outside the box. Spurs pulled one back late on when Conor Gallagher poked home from close range, their first goal in the Premier League since the final day of last season. Jan Paul van Hecke powered in a header in the 98th minute, but it was too little, too late as Villa head back to Birmingham with three points. The result leaves Roberto De Zerbi’s side languishing in the bottom three, while the Villans move up to 15th in the table. Aston Villa relieved as Spurs finally score but remain winlessMcGinn admitted that Villa were the inferior team in the first half, but felt they deserved the win based on their performance after the break. “It’s a relief,” McGinn told TNT Sports. “Leading up to the international break, you don’t want to be in the bottom three.“I thought we were really poor first half, we showed nothing going forward, but the second half we stood tall and deserved the win.”McGinn added that Unai Emery would have been “quite happy with it being 0-0 at half-time, normally we are a lot more organised than what we were. Before the game he spoke to us in detail on how we could win the game.“The Nicolas Jackson goal, he’ll be delighted as we worked on that in training. He’s determined to get us back to where we were with a new a group of players.”Asked whether he started to get worried about the slow start to the season, McGinn replied: “You start to think if the new players believe in what made us successful in the past few years. The new players are buying into it, it takes time. It’s not easy but it’s rewarding.”Buendia said Villa showed real character to bounce back from their poor start on the road. “We were looking for this win from the beginning,” he said. “We had a really difficult start of the season, in terms of not finding out best football. But we kept working very hard. “Today I think we showed really good character. They started strong but we got the goal at the end of the first half.”Read More – Five of the best Premier League away kits in 2026/27See Also – The four clubs making their Champions League debut this seasonFollow the Football Faithful on Social Media:Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube | TikTokThe post Aston Villa relieved as Spurs finally score but remain winless appeared first on The Football Faithful.
