Stewart Elliott Reaches 6000 Win Milestone Thursday Night at Remington Park

Wait 5 sec.

After picking up the mount aboard Lamorna Inn (Munnings) when jockey Floyd Wethey Jr. fell ill earlier on the card, Stewart Elliott collected his 6000th career win in the saddle Thursday night in the ninth race at Remington Park.Employing a stalk-and-pounce trip aboard the 3-year-old filly owned by Judge Lanier Racing, the pair defeated their allowance competition by two lengths for trainer Dick Cappellucci. Elliott is the 23rd rider to reach the milestone and currently sits five wins behind Javier Castellano, who hit the mark in late August at Saratoga.“Geez, it took a little time, but that's this game,” said Elliott after the race. The rider had been stuck on 5,999 wins for a week leading up to the pick up mount. “It has its ups and downs. I'm so grateful to get it done and fortunate.”Elliott was the sole pilot of Smarty Jones (Elusive Quality) during his sensational two-season career, including through the 2004 Triple Crown series, coming a length short of winning it all in the GI Belmont Stakes. He also claims MGISW Round Pond (Awesome Again) and GISW Wildcat Heir (Forest Wildcat) as elite-level runners he'd piloted in his career. Elliott had been aboard MGISP Milwaukee Appeal (Milwaukee Brew) when she ran third in the 2009 Queen's Plate during her bid to become an Oaks/Plate victress after guiding her to the win in the aforementioned Woodbine Oaks.“I've had hard times. That's part of it,” said Elliott. “I've broken some ribs, my collarbone a couple of times, my hand, my foot, my tail-bone. But all in all, over the years, I've been pretty fortunate. I think the worst was when I broke some ribs and punctured a lung and didn't even know it.”When asked if he would ride into his 70s like Perry Ouzts has been doing, 61-year-old Elliott thought it was an entertaining idea, but ultimately not likely to be in his future, saying, “No, I don't think so; not for me. But, you know, my weight is good, and my business is good, and I feel good.”The post Stewart Elliott Reaches 6000 Win Milestone Thursday Night at Remington Park appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
