The Italian media have not taken too kindly to a comment Roberto De Zerbi made following Tottenham’s 0-0 draw against Everton.Spurs have now failed to score in six hours of Premier League football, and understandably, most of the questions posed to De Zerbi in his post-match press conference on Saturday revolved around his side’s issues in front of goal.The Tottenham boss admitted that the Tottenham players may have a mental block in front of goal, but is confident that the floodgates will open for his side once they get one.However, he also made another attempt at a joke, which has not gone down well back in his home country.Photo by Marc Atkins/Getty ImagesTottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi slammed for his comments on Italian footballDe Zerbi joked that he would be praised by the Italian press for keeping two successive clean sheets, contrasting that with the criticism aimed at him by the English media.However, one Italian publication blasted the Tottenham boss for mocking Italian football, accusing him of trying to distract the media from his side’s struggles.Il Messaggero (as relayed by IlNapolista) wrote about De Zerbi’s comments: “Italy is getting closer to Europe. And perhaps soon we won’t be mocked anymore by De Zerbi, who is in serious trouble at Tottenham but the other day, to get out of trouble, he mocked us. ‘I’ve kept two clean sheets in a row: in Italy they’d tell me I’m the best’. The English in the room burst into laughter.“Mr. De Zerbi should spare us the sarcasm about his country, which is now behind but has a glorious history and has won four World Cups to England’s one. At least he, in an Italian way, should get more results and less jokes. If he can do it.”Italian outlet says Spurs’ potential is massive under De ZerbiHowever, Gazzetta dello Sport gave a more measured assessment of the Italian coach and his current struggles in North London.They pointed out that despite the poor results, Tottenham are showing signs of progress and suggested that the project has huge potential.Gazzetta journalist Davide Chinellato wrote in the Italian publication: “That’s what Tottenham, for now, cannot do on the pitch: avoid losing confidence. Against Everton, the impact of not scoring after that dominant opening half-hour was evident, costing them another goalless match.“Their next fixture is at Liverpool on Tuesday in the Carabao Cup, the only competition in which Spurs have scored so far, beating Charlton 5-1. That was a Championship side, and perhaps that’s why it wasn’t enough to unlock De Zerbi’s team.“The Reds, at Anfield, are a different proposition. This was supposed to be a brand new season, full of satisfaction that has yet to arrive. The progress, upon closer inspection, is there, but it’s not yet yielding the desired results.“Spurs are a work in progress, one that is proceeding slowly, as if something is holding them back.
