Merapi webcam image late on 16 Sep 2026 (image: PVMBG)Indonesia's volcano monitoring agency PVMBG reported two lava avalanches from Merapi toward the Kali Sat/Putih drainage during 16 September, with a maximum runout of 1,800 m.Monitoring instruments detected 65 rockfall earthquakes, 84 hybrid or multiphase earthquakes and one distant tectonic earthquake during the 24-hour period. The alert status remained at Level III (Siaga).Activity was stronger on 15 September, when BPPTKG recorded 12 incandescent lava avalanches toward Kali Sat/Putih and Kali Bebeng, according to local reporting. Their maximum runout was 2,000 m.Drone measurements conducted during 4-10 September indicated that the southwestern lava dome had grown by approximately 10,300 cubic meters to an estimated volume of 4,173,600 cubic meters, Media Indonesia reported, citing BPPTKG. The central dome could not be remeasured because emissions obscured the crater.PVMBG said continued magma supply could generate pyroclastic density currents within the designated hazard areas. The restricted zones extend up to 7 km along the Bedog, Krasak and Bebeng drainages, 5 km along the Boyong and Gendol drainages, and 3 km along the Woro drainage. Explosive ejecta could affect an area within 3 km of the summit.
